A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) survey across the six geo-political zone had revealed that public library services are going through hard times.

Mr Olakanmi Adigun, the Director of Public Library Services in the Oyo State Library Board, said the advent of the internet is discouraging many Nigerians from visiting the library for their reading and research, dismissed the notion that conventional library would, in the long run, lose its appeal.

It is not surprising that that libraries are losing their appeals. Here are reasons we think the internet is having a upper hand.

Convenience Internet offers

Through the internet, students can download a Portable Document Format (PDF) and have it on their phones. This alone is of great advantage to that of library, which you must visit it physically.

 New Materials

The Internet provides more timely, accurate and current information compare to that of library where books of yesteryears are still store for students use.

The library has older materials. You would be pressed to find information that is older than 10-15 years old. The Internet provides more timely information because it is changing constantly

Time saving

The internet is much time saving compare to library. With your smartphone, you can goggle and get any information needed instantly than scanning and skimming of books pages as in library. More also, on the internet library, you can be able to search billions of Web pages in just a second.

Internet Offers Access

The advent of the internet has mitigate the challenge of registration. Once you have your smartphone and data available, you can access information. Unlike the case of library where you must have yourself registered before having access to it.

Internet-enabled device are personalized

The internet is personalized. There is no schedule for opening and closing time as in library. Once you have your gadgets available you can access it, even midnight.

The debate can go on but the ease and convenience  the internet offers student will continue to get the upper hand.

Contrary views are welcome!
